The 3 P's of Execution Excellence: Purpose, People and Process

True innovation and value-creation in execution are powered by sharing purpose, creative mindsets and dynamic processes. Together they enable both agility and adaptability in today’s complex environment. Together they drive execution excellence.

Purpose, people and process are the best assets to develop and focus on to drive execution excellence. Technology matters to, but great technology without purpose is open to malpractice. Technology without people is without meaning. Technology without processes doesn't know what to do or where to fit in.

Let's take a closer look at the role of the 3 Ps of execution excellence; purpose, people and process.

Purpose: Purpose creates commitment. People perform at their best when they feel a meaningful connection with their work. The result is beyond compliance with a powerful commitment to achieving shared goals. Developing and sharing a clear and common purpose is an important first step towards effective execution. Purpose in execution requires being explored on three distinct levels; business purpose, team purpose and individual purpose.

Most often, exploring and defining the business purpose behind execution is straight forward and easy to do. However, it's the purpose explored and defined at the team and individual levels that drive the deepest commitment and move people beyond following the rules, compliance.

People: People begin to realize their potential when fully empowered to focus on their ability to respond instead of focusing on things outside of their control. Empowering individuals who are committed to business outcomes requires aligning behind inspiring mindsets while engaging in conscious behaviors.

Sharing and shifting mindsets to focus on one’s ability to respond in the face of all challenges and leveraging curiosity to expand business possibilities are essential to keeping execution focused and moving forward. These new mindsets combined with new skills that improve communications, negotiations, agreements and collaboration are at the heart of learning how to collaborate at higher levels of efficiency and effectiveness.

Processes: Dynamic processes guide the way people collaborate to achieve an outcome. Intelligently designed, these processes become custom roadmaps for effective execution, maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of the team. Successful processes rid execution of superflous and/or redundant activity, guiding action enough to be useful but not so much as to squash innovation and creativity. Processes should be flexible and open to change throughout execution. Their role is to guide action forward and should be designed to serve the people using them. We should never become slaves to the process. Don't forget, they work for us, not the other way around.

Conclusion

Purpose, people and process are the best assets to develop and focus on to drive execution excellence. Purpose drives commitment. People's mindsets and behaviors determine the effectiveness of collaboration. Processes guide interaction forward towards meaningful objectives.
